Ultima Cena (Last Supper), Circa 1970, by Jose Maria Kaydeda
This sophisticated mixed media painting was realized by the esteemed Spanish painter José María Kaydeda circa 1970. The work, entitled "Ultima Cena"- or the "Last Supper" in English- presents a piece of coffee colored wood (perhaps a reference to the table where Jesus and his disciples consumed their last meal) surrounded by a faint penumbra of wispy chalk hued brick pigment floating against a black background. The border of the piece has been painted in a dark crimson with a thick impasto, resembling tousled curls. The work represents an aesthetically compelling piece of Mid Century art by one of Spain's great artist's of the period that would be a winning addition to any style of interior. It comes presented in a custom gallery frame and is in excellent vintage condition.
Born in 1920, José María Kaydeda spent much of his life painting and creating mixed media work in Barcelona and the surrounding area. His creative practice was largely influenced abstract expressionists including Jackson Pollock, Louise Bourgeois, Mark Rothko, and Barnett Newman.
