Stylized Native American Figure with Headdress by Navajo Sculptor R.D. Tsosie
Stylized Native American Figure with Headdress by Navajo Sculptor R.D. Tsosie
This sophisticated modernist sculpture was realized by acclaimed Southwestern sculptor R.D. Tsosie, whose work is represented in many esteemed public and private collections throughout the world, including at the Santa Fe state capitol. This piece helps to explain his renown. It has been realized in a beautiful green agate with sloping curvilinear sides and a headdress featuring myriad rays extending outwards from the stylized face. The figure has two simple ovoid eyes and a mouth represented by a raised circular form with a depression in the center. The figure wears a tasseled necklace which offers a similar, but more abstracted, form as the headdress with its spoked fan shape. From the back, the rich color palate of the green agate-with tones of hazelnut, lemon chiffon, and key lime- can be appreciated without distraction. The sculpture rests on a custom circular hand rubbed walnut base. It is signed on the back "R.D. Tsosie."
