This stunning large scale modernist ceramic serving bowl was realized by the acclaimed artist Jurg Lanrein in Switzerland during the latter half of the 20th century. If features an austere circular form with a cream background that has been beautifully hand embellished by the artist. Verging on figuration, the composition of the vessel offers what appears, on a cursory glance, as a naively rendered human face as if drawn by a small child. A closer examination, however, reveals the artist's mastery with color, form and composition. Alternating forms and line segments in a surprising and sophisticated palate of aubergine, sunflower yellow, emerald green and peach create a dynamic and playfully abstract composition full of verve. Quite simply, this ceramic bowl is a a pleasure for the eyes, as much a functional piece of serve-ware as an objet d'art that promises to add more than a touch of refinement to any surface that it graces. It is signed "Jurg Lanrein" on the back and is in excellent vintage condition.
