Mid-Century Modernist Equestrian Bronze Relief Plaque signed Franz Mikorey
Mid-Century Modernist Equestrian Bronze Relief Plaque signed Franz Mikorey
This stunning Mid-Century Modernist Equestrian Bronze Relief Plaque signed Franz Mikorey originates from Germany, C.1978. This piece features an irregular format in solid bronze with a gorgeous sculptural relief depicting a horse standing in front of a male figure with balled fists raised in a boxing stance, perhaps pulling at the reins or showing force to another figure. The surface is beautifully handled, vibrant and sculptural with a lovely patination. The anatomy of each figure is a dynamic balance of realistic depiction and loose rendering, reminiscent of ancient art while simultaneously referencing Picasso's use of male figures with equestrian subjects, a popular subject matter throughout the history of art and especially modernist works. The figures are well scaled and occupy most of the piece, with a background devoid of imagery yet brimming with textural detail. A gorgeous piece signed in the upper left hand corner, this plaque will style beautifully in a wide array of spaces and settings, from Mid-Century Modernist to Contemporary and Minimal Interiors.
