Mid-Century Modern Sculptural Ebonized Walnut Magazine Holder by Arthur Umanoff
Mid-Century Modern Sculptural Ebonized Walnut Magazine Holder by Arthur Umanoff
This refined Mid-Century Modern magazine holder was realized by the esteemed American designer Arthur Umanoff, circa 1960. The piece offers two open rectilinear ends connected by a rectangular base and two atomic concave cross bars at the top- all in ebonized walnut. Connecting the top and bottom horizontal supports are an array of handcarved totem like forms- that appear inspired by Oceanic/African sculpture. These organic totemic like forms offer a dynamic and striking contrast to the hard edged geometries found elsewhere in the piece. Full of verve and élan, this is Umanoff at his best. The clean modernist lines, and monochromatic palate, make this piece as versatile as it is aesthetically pleasing, blending perfectly with any style of interior from classic Mid-Century Modern to contemporary. It has been restored to mint condition.
