Painted Head Crest Mask on Mount, Probably Yoruba, Nigeria, 20th Century

$8,475.00

A painted head crest mask which appears to be from a ‘Gelede cult,’ known for honoring women and fertility, in the state of Benin (formerly Dahomey) in Nigeria, late 19th century. This piece features vertical gash detailing on both cheeks and forehead. A pointed head piece and matching red lips. It was originally made to be worn as a hat, with the face pointing to the sky. A bold contrast between white and red with black detailing makes this a truly stunning example of African tribal art and a lovely addition to any art collection.

Mounted on a bronze Stand and polished Lucite support base.
