Impressive Papua New Guinea Shield, Late 19th Century

$4,475.00

An impressive Papua New Guinea shield late 19th century of oblong shape with an abstract floral design. A small statue of a man is situated in the middle on top of the shield representing a famous warrior to inspire fear to the enemy. The back of the shield has a metal clip to allow the warrior to hold the shield in front of his body as protection. The motifs depicted on these shields usually refer to plant and animal totems particular to each clan. Papua New Guinea shields exemplify the artistic warfare culture of the region. Shields represented practical and aesthetic objects for protecting one’s self in tribal warfare, events that were often situated in conflicts of identity, ritual, and social factors. Such objects would often be adorned with powerful motifs, color and symbolism to protect the carrier from magic or imbue fear in the opponent. H 67.5″ W19.75″.
